Typing “best italian restaurant near me” into a phone on the 14th Street platform returns a list sorted by ad spend, not by walking distance. Union Square is a bad station to guess at. Three sets of platforms run under three different streets here, and the staircase you pick can add four or five minutes to your walk before you have chosen anything to eat. So this starts at the turnstile rather than at the restaurant. Seven Italian rooms follow, each placed by how long the walk takes from the exit closest to it, with the exit named.

Quick answer

The shortest Italian walk from Union Square is Tarallucci e Vino at 15 East 18th Street, about three minutes from the Union Square West staircases at 16th Street. Ribalta, at 48 East 12th Street, is roughly the same three minutes if you came in on the L. Six minutes gets you Il Cantinori on East 10th Street or Paul & Jimmy’s on East 18th. Eight to ten minutes north opens Rezdôra, Isabelle’s Osteria and Novità.

Which exit to take

The station stacks three lines running in three directions, and they do not share a street.

The 4, 5 and 6 platforms sit under Fourth Avenue and Union Square East. Stairs reach the street at the southwest and southeast corners of Fourth Avenue and 14th Street, there is an entrance with an elevator at the northeast corner inside Zeckendorf Towers, and one more exit comes up at Union Square East and 15th Street. This is the side you want for anything on Park Avenue South.

The N, Q, R and W platforms run under Broadway and cut beneath Union Square Park itself. Two staircases surface inside the park between 14th and 15th Streets, and two more at Union Square West and 16th Street. The 16th Street pair saves the most walking if you are heading north.

The L runs west to east under 14th Street, below both of the others. Its western mezzanine leaves you on the south side of 14th Street between Broadway and University Place, which is the correct side of the street for anything downtown.

A three-minute walk

Tarallucci e Vino, 15 East 18th Street

Between Fifth Avenue and Broadway, two blocks up from the Union Square West stairs at 16th Street. It opens at 8am on weekdays and 9am on Saturday, runs to 10:30pm Monday through Thursday, to 11pm on Friday and Saturday, and 11am to 10:30pm on Sunday. That unbroken stretch is the practical argument for it. There is no dead hour between lunch and dinner to fall into.

The kitchen bakes its pastries in house under head pastry chef Alessandro Fortini and makes wood-fired pinsa romana alongside pasta and risotto. Happy hour runs 3pm to 6pm in the bar and outdoor area only, with prosecco and an Aperol spritz at $11 and house wine at $10. Best suited to an arrival nobody planned.

Ribalta, 48 East 12th Street

Between University Place and Broadway, two blocks straight down from the L’s 14th Street stairs. Ribalta cooks Neapolitan pizza and lists a Gambero Rosso citation, a fifth place in 50 Top Pizza USA and a Michelin Guide entry on its own site, which puts the address in Greenwich Village. Fair enough; the block reads that way. Open noon to 10pm Sunday through Thursday and noon to midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Consider this when someone at the table will not commit to a full Italian dinner, or when the meal has to happen at 11pm on a Friday.

A six-minute walk

Il Cantinori, 32 East 10th Street

Between University Place and Broadway, four blocks below 14th Street on the same downtown line as Ribalta. Lunch is short and specific, Monday to Friday from noon to 2:45pm. Dinner runs 5pm to 10pm Sunday through Thursday and to 10:30pm on Friday and Saturday. Reservations go through OpenTable or by phone on (212) 673-6044. This is the sit-down-and-stay option on a block otherwise full of quick ones.

Paul & Jimmy’s, 123 East 18th Street

North up Park Avenue South from the Fourth Avenue exits, on the block between Park Avenue South and Irving Place. Open since 1950, cooking southern Italian with Neapolitan roots under executive chef Greg Azzollini: handmade pasta, gnocchi, carbonara, the Italian-American canon. Hours are noon to 10pm Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 9pm Sunday and Monday, with no break between services, so a 3:30pm meal is possible here when it is not elsewhere. The restaurant says it accommodates gluten allergies.

An eight to ten minute walk

Rezdôra, 27 East 20th Street

Six blocks north of the square and half a block west of Park Avenue South. The menu is Emilia-Romagna rather than Italy generally, with sections headed “from emilia” and “from modena.” Hours on its own site are Monday 5pm to 10:30pm, Tuesday through Friday noon to 2:30pm and 5pm to 10:30pm, and weekends 11:30am to 2:30pm and 5pm to 10:30pm. Reservations run through SevenRooms from the restaurant’s site, and booking ahead is the only sensible way in.

Isabelle’s Osteria, 245 Park Avenue South

Straight up Park Avenue South from the Fourth Avenue exits, between 19th and 20th Streets. Contemporary Italian, homemade pastas and seasonal dishes, in a 150-seat open room with a long bar and a separate private dining room. What earns the extra blocks on this particular walk is the afternoon. Aperitivo Hour runs Monday to Friday from 2pm to 6pm at the bar, with small bites, spritzers, cocktails, wine and beer each at $5, and it covers exactly the stretch when the rooms closer to the square have stopped serving lunch. Named pastas on the current menu include rigatoni alla vodka, tagliatelle Bolognese and bucatini carbonara. Reservations open 30 days ahead on OpenTable and Resy for parties up to ten. Novità, 102 East 22nd Street

Just east of Park Avenue South, and the longest walk here at eight blocks. Lunch is Monday to Friday, noon to 3:30pm, with dinner 5pm to 10pm; weekends are dinner only. The phone is (212) 677-2222. This is the quiet one, which is the entire reason to walk the extra four blocks past Rezdôra.

Choosing an Italian restaurant near Union Square

Pick by constraint rather than by preference. Odd hour or no reservation: Tarallucci e Vino and Ribalta have the widest windows. A table that can hear itself: Novità. Pasta as the reason for the trip: Rezdôra, booked well ahead. The gap between a late afternoon and an 8pm reservation somewhere else: the bar at Isabelle’s. Something familiar and unhurried at 4pm: Paul & Jimmy’s.

On the 4, 5 or 6, the Union Square East exit at 15th Street does the same job for anything up Park Avenue South. Coming off the L, use the western stairs on the south side of 14th Street between Broadway and University Place and walk downtown rather than doubling back through the park.
