Where to eat Italian on Restaurant Row
West 46th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues is a short walk west from Broadway, and three of the six rooms in this guide are on that one block.
Becco, 355 West 46th Street
Becco’s draw is the Sinfonia di Paste: a choice of Caesar salad or antipasto, followed by unlimited tableside service of Executive Chef William Gallagher’s three daily pasta preparations, listed at $36.95. Every bottle on its $45 wine list is priced at $45. A la carte, the menu lists meatballs at $18, chicken with lemon, olives and capers at $33, and a signature osso buco with farro risotto at $58.
Watch the days. Becco is closed on Mondays, serves lunch only on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, and runs dinner from 4:30pm Tuesday through Friday and from 4pm on weekends, until 11pm on Friday and Saturday and 9pm on Sunday. For a group, its site lists six private spaces, from the Upstairs Front for 30 to the Sala Terra for up to 100, with inquiries to (212) 397-7597.
Orso, 322 West 46th Street
Orso describes itself as an intimate Italian restaurant in the Theater District serving rustic Tuscan fare before and after Broadway shows, and its site says it opened on March 17, 1983. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 11pm and closed on Sundays and Mondays.
This is the room to book rather than chance. Reservations open up to one month ahead, online or by phone at (212) 489-7212, parties of six or more must call, and the site warns that pre-theater tables book very quickly. The menu lists a Margherita pizza at $25, pappardelle Bolognese at $30, ravioli with a ricotta-and-mushroom filling in porcini cream at $29 and a rosemary-and-lemon half chicken at $36.
Lattanzi, 361 West 46th Street
Lattanzi calls itself Italian home cooking and dates itself to 1984. Its signature is carciofi alla giudia, the Jewish-style artichoke, at $25; pastas include tonnarelli cacio e pepe and fettuccine with beef ragù at $31 each and linguine with clams at $35.
It is the most useful of the three on the days the others close. Lattanzi serves dinner every night: from 5pm on Monday, 4pm Tuesday through Sunday, until 10pm most nights and 9pm on Sunday and Monday, with lunch from noon to 2pm on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Group bookings go through (212) 315-0980.

La Masseria, 235 West 48th Street
La Masseria is a few minutes from Broadway on 48th Street, and its site says the room draws on the Puglia region and was designed to be “rustic-and-relaxed with plenty of old world charm.” Pastas include spaghetti allo spugnito di pomodoro at $31.50, Penne Masseria at $35 and linguine alle vongole at $38, with a grilled chicken battuta at $37.
The hours are what make it useful after a show: lunch Monday through Saturday from noon to 3pm, and dinner from 4:30pm until 11pm on Monday and until midnight Tuesday through Saturday. The site lists no Sunday hours, so call before planning a Sunday meal. It lists the N, R and W at 49th Street, the 1 at 50th Street and the C and E at 50th Street as its nearby subway stops.
La Pecora Bianca Theater District, 1633 Broadway
A few blocks up Broadway from the bowtie, La Pecora Bianca’s Theater District location says all of its pastas are made in house. The all-day menu lists rigatoni with vodka sauce and stracciatella at $28, tagliatelle Bolognese at $30 and campanelle al limone with roasted shrimp at $30.
It is open every day, from 11:30am on weekdays (11am on Wednesday) and 10am on weekends, until midnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. For a group, the site lists a large party table for up to 14 guests. The phone is (212) 901-3616.
Joe’s Pizza, 1435 Broadway
Joe’s Broadway location is a couple of blocks south of the Times Sq–42 St station. Its site traces the business to 1975 and its founder Joe Pozzuoli, originally from Naples, with the original shop at 7 Carmine Street in Greenwich Village. This is a slice counter, not a sit-down dinner, and the site does not post hours for this location, so call (646) 559-4878 before you count on it late at night.
